Cowboys are a big part of America’s history.  The very first cowboys were actually from Mexico and were called vaqueros. On horseback they would drive their cattle north from Mexico to let them graze in America. It didn’t take the Americans long before they themselves took on the ways of the vaqueros and the history of American cowboys had begun.

Stories of famous cowboys and cowgirls are so intriguing that even 200 years later we still love to study these legendary figures and enjoy bringing their memories back to life by dressing up in costume as our favorite old west characters and re-living a little piece of history.

A small sampling of cowboy outfits available for purchase online is provided below.

Toy Story Woody Infant Costume. This little Woody is ready to wrangle up some toys for his own Toy Story adventure!  The costume includes the bodysuit, the cowboy hat, and the booties.   This is an officially licensed © Disney costume and it comes in two sizes: 0-6 months or 12-18 months; however, the sizes run small, so go bigger! For example, the 18 month size says it’s for 20-26 pounds and 28-32 inches, but will actually only fit babies less than 18 pounds and 29 inches tall.  The costume is adorable, so as long as you plan accordingly for the size you will love this costume.








Jessie Toddler Costume. This little Jessie jumpsuit comes in one-size fits toddler sizes 2T-4T.  This is an officially licensed costume and you might want to keep in mind that their sizing tends to run a little small. It features cow print chaps, a Western loop design collar, yellow cuffs, attached belt, and last but not least…Jessie’s red cowgirl hat.




Cowboy Cowgirl Ride-a-Pony Costume. Giddyup!!!  Little cowboys and cowgirls will have a great time riding their own pony!  And doesn’t that brown pony look a little bit like Bullseye in Toy Story?

The pony “costume” includes the 3-D horse with adjustable suspenders and comes in a choice of black or brown.  The  costume description says it fits most kids ages 4-8, but these ponies will work for most 3-year-olds too.

This pony “costume” does not include the cowboy outfits the children are wearing in the picture so those will have to be purchased separately.

Kids will enjoy playtime with this pony all year long and isn’t it great to come across a costume that encourages children’s imagination and also gets them to be active rather than sitting in front of the TV.

Toy Story Woody & Jessie Toddler/Child Costumes.

The Toy Story – Woody Classic Toddler/Child Costume is a newly designed Woody outfit released in 2010.  The outfit includes a polyester screen-printed jumpsuit and cowboy hat.  The cowboy hat is made of a type of sturdy foam-like material.   The boots need to be purchased separately.  The little red undershirt in the picture (that looks like a little red collar) is not included in the costume.

This costume is officially licensed ©Disney product and is available in Toddler Size: 3-4T and Child Sizes: Small (4-6), Medium (7-8) and Husky(10H-12H).  Sizes run small so you might want to buy a larger size.  This costume is hand washable.

For $10 more you might want to check out the Toy Story – Woody Deluxe Child Costume. This costume is also an officially licensed ©Disney product and is only available in the following sizes: 3T-4T, 4-6, 7-8 and is machine washable. In addition to the polyester jumpsuit and cowboy hat, the deluxe costume comes with an attached holster, boot spats imprinted with spurs, and a bandana.  The hat with this costume is made from an almost indestructible material.

Little girls love this Toy Story – Jessie Child Costume.  It includes the printed bodysuit with attached chaps and a red cowboy hat.  This is another officially licensed ©Disney product and is available in Toddler Size: 3-4T and Child Size: 4-6. It is made of 100% polyester and is machine washable.

An upgraded version for Jessie is the Toy Story – Jessie Deluxe Toddler/Child Costume and for $20 more this costume has more detail in the jumpsuit design of the shirt and cuffs, plus it has a little fringe on the chaps/pants.  It also comes with the matching red cowgirl hat and yellow hair bows.


Toy Story Woody & Toy Story Jessie – Adult Costumes. Kids aren’t the only ones who can get in on the Toy Story fun!  Check out these officially licensed Disney/Pixar costumes for adult size:

Toy Story Woody, which comes in Extra Large (42-46) and includes a hand washable jumpsuit with screen printed: shirt, bandana, vest, sheriff badge, belt, and faux steer buckle and blue pants.  The hat is also included in this costume.  Shoes are not included so you’ll want to be sure and pick up a pair of cowboy boots to complete the look!  You can also find Toy Story Wood Plus Size which fits size 50-52 (after you click the link, scroll to the bottom of the page to see image).

There’s also a Woody deluxe costume available that comes with a collar and an attached vest, instead of a screen printed collar and vest. It also comes with a handkerchief and attached boot covers. This one’s available in X-Large (42-46) and XX-Large (50-52).

and two different versions of Toy Story Jessie…

Toy Story Jessie Classic (not pictured), a hand washable screen printed jumpsuit which features a shirt and belt with a faux buckle.  The jumpsuit legs have the look of cowhide design chaps. The cherry red hat is included with the costume, but you’ll need to purchase the cowgirl boots separately. Available in adult sizes: Small (4-6); Medium (8-10); and Large (12-14).  Sizes run small so we suggest ordering a size or two larger!

Toy Story 2 Jessie (pictured) costs about $15 more, but it has a little more detail.  This outfit includes the red cowgirl hat, a yellow hair tie, and the jumpsuit which includes an attached belt, instead of a screen printed belt, and is embellished with decorative stitching, trim, and raised cuffs.  The cowhide chaps are a little more realistic looking and have a little faux fringe on the sides.  It’s available in Medium (8-10) and Large (12-14) and also runs small, so order big.  And again, boots are not included with this costume so you’ll need to purchase your own cowgirl boots.

Cowboy Cowgirl Costumes. In this cowboy outfit your child will be ready to take on the ways of the Old West.  The base costume comes with a faux suede vest and armbands, cow print chaps that feature a rodeo style buckle and faux suede fringe trim (shirt, jeans, hat, bandolier, bandana and duster are not included).  The little cowgirl is wearing the base costume which can be used for a boy or a girl.  The costume is made of hand washable polyester, comes in X-Small through Large (waist size 21”-26”).  For more detailed sizing information go to the costume link.

Cowboy Stories, Poetry, Jokes, & Tricks

If you want to be the hit of your cowboy party or event, then telling a good cowboy story, poem, or joke will do the trick.  With a little preparation and practice you’ll be spinning cowboy tales with the best of ‘em.

A great place to start is to watch a video or two of some cowboy storyteller/poets and see the different methods used and what might fit your style best.  With a little research online you’ll be able to find a good cowboy story, famous cowboy poetry, old west slang, and some good cowboy jokes.

If storytelling just isn’t your thing, maybe you’d prefer to show off a cowboy trick or two.  A little “gun spinning” or some “lasso tricks” can be pretty impressive without ever saying a word!

Plus if your event is a reenactment or school event, these methods are a fun way to add an educational element, that is, of course, in addition to the fact that it’s just plain fun to share some good old-fashioned cowboy folklore and humor!
If you want to be a little different from the usual cowboy costume from the good old days, you could put on a cowboy outfit and portray a modern day cowboy, City Slicker style.  Today’s cowboys have many similarities with the old time cowboy.  Even though cattle today are herded onto cattle cars and transported by train, the modern cowboys are still needed to go out and ride the range because the sound of modern equipment can easily spook the cattle, they check and repair fence posts, they still use their rope/lariat to catch strays, and many other necessary tasks.  Plus there’s still plenty of cowboys and cowgirls to be found showing off their skills at local rodeos.
